Reception Desk, 2001.

American white oak veneered plywood and solid American white oak, distressed, latex (emulsion) paint, pigment stain and lacquer.
H 860 mm X L 1980 mm X H 900 mm (H 34" X L 78" X D 25-1/2")

Designed and made to order for a hairdresser's business in Houston, Texas. A popular look in the southern US states is a distressed, weathered look. Here this was achieved by painting water based white paint on to bare American White oak. The bulk of the paint is wiped off before it dries and later sanded. This leaves the paint in the open pores and is reminiscent of a technique called liming as it partially reveals the wood's natural colour. The paint was protected with pre-catalysed lacquer. The upper part of the desk is oak coloured with pigment stain and, like the base, finished in pre-catalysed lacquer.
