Harrogate Shows The Furniture Department of Leeds College of Art and Design have been offered a stand at The North of England Woodworking and Power Tool Show for
several years. The show takes place in a pavilion at the Great
Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate near the end of November each year. It
is a venue for makers and suppliers of tools, machinery, computer
software, wood finishes, etc, to display and sell their products
to amateur and professional woodworkers.
The show
organisers invite specialist woodworkers and others to demonstrate
methods of work and techniques at stands set aside for these
activities. Craftspeople demonstrate jointing techniques, turning,
carving, polishing and so on; there are usually other craftspeople
demonstrating, for example, traditional Windsor chair making, and
a chair bodger demonstrates use of a pole lathe and other tools of that
trade, eg, a shaving horse.
Leeds College of Art and Design are
the only educational institution that take a stand at the show. It
is a great way to meet others in the trade, network with
employers, see what is new and interesting and, most importantly, helps
maintain a high profile of the college, the department and our
students in the north of England-- a high profile does help us to
recruit students to our courses, although it is difficult to quantify
exactly how many. Certainly it as an opportunity to meet potential
students face-to-face outside the confines of the college buildings.
